Knology

New Office Building | Rapid City, SD

Knology (originally Black Hills Fibercom) is a retail telecommunications company serving the Black Hills area of western South Dakota. The company provides telephone, internet and cable TV services to businesses and residences. Their distribution system consists of a fiber optic backbone connecting hub locations throughout the service area. From these hubs, a combination of fiber optic and bi-directional coaxial cable provide connections to the end user. This distribution system, coupled with state-of-the-art digital switching head end equipment, provides customers with the most advanced communication capabilities available today.

West Plains Engineering, as Lead Design Consultant, assisted in the planning and design of both buildings and hub sites. The heart of the system is housed in a 25,000 square foot headquarters building in Rapid City. This facility is equipped with computer room environmental controls for the switching equipment. All critical electrical loads are furnished with conditioned, uninterruptible power via a 150 KVA UPS. In addition, the whole facility is backed up by a 500 KW standby emergency power generator. These systems will ensure that Knology’s service to their clients is the most reliable available in the marketplace.
