State of South Dakota Capitol Building Lighting Improvements

As part of federal ARRA stimulus money, West Plains Engineering was tasked to find ways to reduce energy and at the same time improve quality of lighting at the South Dakota State Capitol building. Lighting above the senate and house floors along with exterior flood lighting was determined as the best candidate for replacement. The lighting above stained glass in the senate and house was replaced with 1000 watt HID luminescent tube lighting. This replacement cut energy consumption by a third. Another added benefit was easier lamp replacement by maintenance as the fixture location was moved from above the stained glass to the side. Existing exterior 1000 watt HID flood lighting was replaced to save energy and improve the overall lighting quality and contrast of the exterior dome and façade of the state Capitol utilizing smaller wattage flood lights at various locations around the dome.
