Student Services Center & Resident Housing | Madison, SD

West Plains Engineering provided mechanical and electrical engineering  to convert the existing Madison Community Hospital and Clinic into a Resident Hall and Learning Engagement Center on the Dakota State University campus.

The building houses students in a new suite-like living areas with collaborative spaces, study rooms and social spaces. The existing clinic space was demolished and the existing hospital rooms were transformed into student suites and collaborative spaces.

The existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems were removed and new systems were designed. The new mechanical HVAC system is composed of three air handling units with an air cooled chiller. VAV boxes were installed in the various spaces for temperature control. New plumbing fixtures and piping were installed to meet the needs of the remodel building and a fire sprinkler system was installed.

The existing electrical service was reworked due to the electrical service expansions over the years for new additions and remodels. New lighting was installed as combination of new LED and the existing fluorescent lights installed along with lighting controls.

New fiber optic cabling was installed to connect this new building, that is across from the main campus, into the main campus network system.

The new systems were updated to meet ASHRAE 90.1 standards and where practical with extra metering of utilities were installed for University monitoring.
