West Plains Engineering provided mechanical and electrical design services for the Barracks/Classroom Building 802 for the South Dakota Army National Guard at Camp Rapid in Rapid City, SD. The mechanical design involves a geothermal system, multiple heat pumps and air-to-air heat exchangers providing ventilation, heating and cooling throughout the facility. The geothermal well field includes a supplemental electric boiler to assist the well field loop temperature during extreme design heating days. The plumbing system includes all available means of water efficiencies. The domestic water is heated by a water-to-water heat pump/exchanger with recirculated hot water throughout the facility. All interlocking, energy uses monitoring and temperature control is accomplished by a Building Automation System (BAS). The Direct Digital Control (DDC) building control system is an expansion of an existing state-wide Energy Management Control System (EMCS). A special feature is an auditorium for lectures, presentations, and movies. The space boasts fixed seating integral power/data devices located in the desks for each seat. A control booth houses audio/visual equipment for projectors and flat screens, along with data/server equipment needed for advanced functions.
