Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016 is Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Part of Engineers Week, this special day is a movement to show girls how creative engineering is and how engineers are changing our world. What better way to celebrate than to introduce one of our female engineers and find out firsthand what its like to be a girl engineer!

A Quick Talk with….Melanie Raap-Eitreim, PERaap, Melanie_Formal_crop

When and how did you know you wanted to become an engineer?

I had decided on engineering in the 6th grade after an aptitude test recommended engineering and teaching as two options for people who are good at math. I thought engineering sounded smart!

I chose the electrical discipline some time in high school thinking that it might be really cool to build medical equipment like heart pacers.

What do you like best about your job?

I love the variety it offers. It does have the technical side, but is also has opportunities for making things look pretty with choosing light fixtures. I like working with lots of different clients. But my favorite part is the sense of accomplishment after a project is built and being able to drive by it and think “I had a hand in making that happen!”

What would you tell young women interested in engineering?

Hang in there. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it!
