The microbrewery movement has taken hold throughout the nation’s heartland – and Cedar Rapids is no exception. The post-flood revitalization of the Downtown Corridor paved the way for brew pubs of all shapes and sizes, including the recently opened Iowa Brewing Company.

Iowa Brewing Company is a start-up microbrewery, which offers more than 30 unique craft beers and a few craft sodas. Aspect Architecture was hired to lead the remodel and design effort while West Plains Engineering provided the mechanical, plumbing and electrical design services for the renovation of a 12,600 square foot warehouse. The renovated facility provides full craft beer production including fermentation, grain milling, cold storage, public taste testing, offices and product development.

The fermentation process is supported with a low pressure 15 psig steam boiler with stainless steel tank jackets and heat exchangers at the hot liquor tank, mash tun lauter tun tank, and the brew house general kettle tank. A low-temperature chiller provides 28 degree glycol/chilled water solution to cool the general fermentation tanks, brite tank and the cold liquor tank. A granular activated carbon (GAC) filtered water system serves the water make-up for the brewing process.

Space conditioning and moisture control is provided by a 30-ton-dehumification rooftop unit, which provides air-conditioning, natural gas heat, economizer exhaust and dehumidification for the entire space.

A trench drainage system serves the brewery tanks draining, clean-in-place operation, and wash down activities including a keg washer. The tasting room features industrial shade lighting fixtures with LED lamps and LED track lighting to highlight the bar and brewing equipment. The remainder of the facility is illuminated with linear LED fixtures. A new 208 volt, 3 phase electrical service was installed to provide the electrical for the building.

A public tasting area with bar seating displays the 30 craft beers on tap for sampling and purchasing. A large cooler provide house storage of beer kegs with finished product, while a smaller cooler provides for miscellaneous cold storage of sampling beers.

This facility performs craft beer production with eleven tanks, as well as future production expansion with an additional eight tanks. Construction was completed in January of 2016.
