Street Department Maintenance Building | Brookings, SD

West Plains Engineering provided mechanical and electrical design services for a new street department maintenance building for the City of Brookings in South Dakota.

The project included two parts, the first of which was to renovate the portion of the building to remain, including a new water service and restroom and moving the air compressor into a safer location. The gas service was also moved to the west side of the building out of the way of the building addition. The electrical design included a fire alarm system for the space, along with lighting and power for the added restroom.

The second part of the project was to add a new shop space that included a shop floor, wash bay, offices, breakroom, and bathrooms. The plumbing in the project included new bathrooms with shower facilities, a small kitchenette in the breakroom, and hose bibs and compressed air system throughout the shop. The sanitary for the shop area was served by a trench drain in each bay that ran parallel with the doors. The ventilation for the shop and wash bay was handled with an energy recovery unit. The shop and wash bay was heated with in-floor heat using high-efficiency boilers with circulation pumps. The office area was heated and cooled with furnaces and condensing units. The electrical systems designed for the project included a new electrical service, lighting with occupancy sensor control and power as needed for the space, a service lift in the maintenance bay and a generator for emergency power.
