Redlin Art Center
New Museum | Watertown, WY
West Plains Engineering provided mechanical design services for this four-story, 52,000 square foot brick building. It features Rockville white granite columns that are 38 feet tall and four stories with a brick façade. Rather than one large room filled with paintings, the Redlin Art Center takes a unique approach to display its namesake’s work.
Visitors can wander down hallways lined with oak railings to view the paintings. A lecture/auditorium and a planetarium-style theater are located in the lower level of the building. There are three floors of gallery areas and the fourth floor consists primarily of office space.
The mechanical systems consist of a central boiler plant to provide hot water for heating through the use of several water source heat pumps spaced throughout the facility. These heat pumps were used to convert the heating energy of the hot water to an air stream with the forced air being the heating media which was used in the occupied spaces of the building. Cooling was achieved using the same water source heat pumps and piping system coupled with a closed circuit fluid cooler, which is located on the east side of the building. The fresh air and relief air for the facility were brought in through artificial chimneys, which are located on the roof of the building.
