Canton Maintenance Shop | Canton, SD
West Plains Engineering provided mechanical and electrical design for this new 14,000 square foot DOT maintenance shop.
The new building consists of four drive-through bays, one single direction bay, and one drive-through wash bay. The shop has in-floor heat and unit heaters for quick recovery when the garage doors open. Ventilation was provided with a large plate ERV with gas heat after the ventilation air exits the plate exchanger to bring the air up to neutral temperature. High-efficiency gas boilers were used to provide the heating water for the in-floor heat.
The office area is heated and cooled with a furnace and condensing unit pair. An inline exhaust fan was installed for exhaust in the pit and interlocks with the light so it will run whenever anyone is in the pit. Bathroom fixtures included a standard flush valve toilet, urinal, and a shower. Exhaust in the bathrooms was provided by a small ceiling-mounted inline exhaust fan.
Fluorescent high bays were used to light the garage, and recessed indirect fixtures light the office spaces. A portable generator connection was installed to bring in back-up power to the building in case of a utility outage. Owner’s equipment included a gas pressure washer for the wash bay and a crane lift. Reels were installed at each column between the bays for lights, receptacles, and air hoses. Between each bay, there are hose bibs and a compressed air connection. The site also included unleaded gasoline and diesel fuel island.
