For the second consecutive year, the staff have rolled up their sleeves to join the urban gardening trend with their own office plots. The space is divided into sections with each employee cultivating his or her own produce. The bounty however – is typically shared.
“We expanded the garden this year with about nine employees participating,” said Mark Grebner, P.E., West Plains Engineering Division Manager. “There is typically quite a bit of sharing at the end though as the produce sometimes comes in faster than we can use it.”
Draftsperson Dustin Torguson is known as this year’s “curve breaker”. His ambitious plot includes Brussel sprouts, cabbage, onions, green peppers, jalapenos, beets, sweet potatoes, carrots and spaghetti squash. For Torguson, keeping up his garden at work is a great way to unwind.
“I’ve always enjoyed gardening because it’s relaxing,” he said. “I don’t have much room at home, and I like canning and pickling what I grow.”
The Sioux Falls office of West Plains Engineering is located at 4609 South Techlink Circle and can be reached at (605) 362-3753.
